Jose W. Hernandez found himself drawn to the area of law after a high school government class and graduating Salutatorian from La Joya High School (Texas) in 1995. He then received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and English from Southwest Texas State University (San Marcos) graduating Cum Laude in 1999. He received his law degree from South Texas College of Law (Houston), graduating in 2002.  

Jose W. Hernandez worked as an Associate Attorney then later Partner at the law firm of Ortiz & Millin, LP (formerly the Law Office of Reynaldo Ortiz, LP). His areas of law practice focused on personal injury, family law, consumer law, insurance bad faith law, wills and trusts, probate, business and individual debt collection, and construction law.
